Thriving Conspiracy Theories
Trump’s presidency is ending but its effect will be long-lasting and, its impact on society will be far-reaching. It may eventually destroy our democracy and the country as a free nation. Apart from weakening our government agencies, destroying the independence of the judiciary, challenging our electoral process, and casting doubt on our free press, Trump’s biggest impact will be on the rise of conspiracy theories and hoaxes. He was the source of many unproven or disproven theories; like the birther movement of Obama, ‘Climate change is a hoax’, COVID death numbers were manipulated, childhood vaccines cause autism, evidence-free claims of voter fraud, etc. Under Trump conspiracy theories thrived and he supported many baseless rumors. His reluctance to condemn the fringe groups who spread bizarre theories gave legitimacy to such internet communities. Some of the groups that were on the fringes of society slowly became mainstream. The most visible conspiracy movement is the Q-Anon. They even made inroads into politics and to conservative circles. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a staunch Q-Anon supporter from Georgia, got elected to Congress from a heavily conservative constituency.
Trump’s branding the Mainstream Media as “Fake News” is the major reason why people turn to questionable sources for information. The majority of the population disdain the Mainstream Media and their distrust grew with the constant attacks of Trump. When they are confused and nothing to cling to they are prone to believe whatever fits their view. President Barack Obama once said: we accept only information, whether true or not, that fits our opinions, instead of basing our opinions on the evidence that’s out there.”
People should try to get more information from different sources on every issue and should be current with events that are happening in society. They should also have an open mind to see opposing views. Question What is not logical or practical. And should form a fact-based opinion. Then only they could be free from conspiracy theories. When people get into conspiracy theories they will lose confidence in elections, trust in government, and faith in democracy.
