The Second Amendment
In the latest mass shooting incident, gunfire at a Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) rail yard killed nine people. There were 232 shootings in the USA so far this year. In 2020 about 45,000 people died in gun violence.
Each time a mass shooting is reported, the gun control activists call for more gun restrictions, and the gun rights lobby asks for relaxation of gun laws. The second amendment dialogue heats up. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” – the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads. Some argue the 18th century Amendment is irrelevant in the 21st century. They say the founders of the nation allowed people to form a militia to prevent the US government from starting a military force. That all citizens are part-time soldiers and they should police their communities. If a government uses the military or police force against the citizens, they should be able to defend themselves, then only the freedom becomes real. Since the US government started a full-time professional military, the national guard, and every local government has an armed police force, the need for the militia is irrelevant. Modern technology has transformed firearms into high-powered, more deadly, and easier-to-use weapons over the past two centuries; something the founding fathers did not envision at the time of framing the constitution.
But the gun rights people argue that the term “militia” is different from the US army or National guard. To keep and bear arms is individual freedom and that fundamental right to own and carry firearms should not be infringed.
It is interesting arguments to note; when the second amendment was written into the constitution, Blacks, and Native Americans were not allowed to bear arms. Gun control Laws were the reaction to non-whites buying guns. California’s gun-control laws were enacted in response to Black Panthers’ armed patrols and open carry. Gun rights laws removed such restrictions, reduced the white’s dominance, and allowed everyone accesses to high-capacity weapons.
Also, another argument is that Defund or Dismantle Police is the original, implied intent of the second amendment. All citizens to be armed, organized, ready to defend their society and enforce the laws. So why we need the police force?
